Standard

The alam or standard is traditionally used in religious processions, specifically the annual Muharram ceremony in honour of the martyred Shi’i patron – Imam Husayn; grandson of the Prophet Muhammad who died during the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD; an event of great significance to the Shi’I community and their religious history. The shape of the alam also signifies the sword of Imam Ali. This is a rare 19th century copper representation, possibly from Southern India.
