The triangular-shaped head and trunk cover is created with a vertical series of gold-coloured metal crescents surrounded by hemispheres and surmounted by a small ‘torso’, possibly suggesting the portly body of Ganesh, the elephant headed god, all applied onto a red cotton ground, with looped coloured yarn surround. The style is typical of elephant caparisons used throughout Kerala in the late 19th and 20th centuries for celebration.
