Rising in Unison was a commission received by the artist from a family member during the 1999s, hence the unusual large size of the work (the work was designed for a specific location at Bugis Junction Tower main lobby). This work is part of the artist’s trademark three-dimensional Wave Relief series, which he started during the 1980s. The original marquette for this commission piece currently resides with the artist’s family. A prolific and successful artist during his lifetime (1945 to 2006), with a wide artistic oeuvre that includes painting and sculpture, Anthony Poon was the recipient of the 1991 Cultural Medallion Award. The National Art Collection currently has custodianship of 49 of his works within its permanent collection. This collection consists of works representing each stage of development in Anthony Poon’s artistic career, starting with works taken from his early days as a student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, through to those works developed in his time in the United Kingdom (UK) and subsequent return to Singapore, as well as maquettes of public commissions.
