Born in 1948 in Singapore, Poh Siew Wah is a self-taught painter and lifelong art teacher. A recipient of several awards, including the Tan Tze Chor Art Award (1987) and a Merit Award, IBM Award (1990), Poh is known for his diverse styles ranging from representational watercolours to abstract paintings. This exceptionally richly coloured work is one of Poh’s earliest attempts to incorporate the collage technique into his work (using his own manufactured marbled paper). Singaporean art historian Constance Sheares says of Poh’s application of collage: “...Poh applied it not to make a statement or for political or humorous purposes but for its associational poetry...to create a dialogue between the materials used and what was being depicted. Marbled paper has for Poh an element of chance, a primordial quality suggesting growth, flow, the earth itself.” (Extracted from the exhibition catalogue, Court of Justice Hall, Flensburg, Germany, 1995)
