The phulkari or flower-work embroidered cloths are traditionally gifted to a young bride at the time of her wedding in the Punjab region. An essential part of the bride’s trousseau, the phulkari is sometimes designed for everyday wear and at other times for special occasions. Young Punjabi girls are taught the craft of phulkari embroidery in their teen years to contribute to the making of their own phulkari. This is a sapt rangi or seven-coloured embroidered textile with large, repetitive chevron patterns.
