This silver standing cup with a reeded rim and scroll handles is engraved with flowering plants, possibly peonies, and a phoenix of sophisticated plumage. A shield-cartouche is engraved with a dedication or award to Capt. P Meerman, followed by a list of names in Chinese. Horse racing, rowing and cricket were popular pastimes in the Treaty Ports and junior members of the great trading houses would have competed for silver trophies such as this.
