This is a programme for the 1965 production of Menyesal, one of the first wayang Peranakan plays to feature women in lead roles. It is signed by Mdm Dolly Ong, one of the actresses in the play and daughter of Ong Thye Watt, a well known member of the Peranakan theatrical community. When men were less inclined to take up women’s roles in plays in the 1960s, the community recruited new performers from “within the family network.”
