This photograph is part of a series which depicts the sights and scenes of 19th and 20th century Singapore. The St. Andrew’s Cathedral is the oldest Anglican church in Singapore. The original neo-Palladian church building was designed by George D. Coleman and completed in 1836. After being struck by lightning twice, the building was declared unsafe and demolished in 1852. The cathedral that now stands on the site was designed in the English Gothic style by Lieutenant-Colonel Ronald Macpherson, who was the Executive Engineer and Superintendent of Convicts in Singapore from 1855 to 1857. Construction of the building was carried out by a crew of Indian convicts and completed under the supervision of Major John Frederick Adolphus McNair. The Church held its first service on 1 October 1861 and was consecrated in 1862. It was elevated to cathedral status in 1869 and gazetted as a national monument in 1973.
