London Tate Gallery marked a shift in Yew Kuan's artistic practice from his earlier social realist phase to a more abstract phase. His interest in colours, shape and form in this picture is revealed in the strong red colours of the gallery and the framing of pictures by arches in the gallery. The use of dark colours in the foreground of a man seated create an atmosphere of Kantian distanced contemplation and disinterestedness.London Tate Gallery is an early work by Lim Yew Kuan when he was pursuing his studies at the Chelsea Art College in London. This painting is reveals how Singapore artists such as Yew Kuan were mobile and engaging with artistic events and movements globally. Pusuing his art education overseas was one way in which Singapore artists began to engage with the larger art world.
