A notice from the Colonial Secretary's Office (1947) and a Certificate of Registration (1962) belonging to the Singapore Rattan Industry Association

The Cantonese dominated the raw rattan processing business in Singapore for much of the twentieth century. In 1910, 17 rattan workshops came together to form the Cantonese Rattan Guild, which was located at No. 25A Hock Lam Street. The name of the association was revised several times - it was renamed the Kwong Pong (Cantonese) Rattan Guild in 1947 and the Singapore Rattan Industry Association in 1978. The local rattan industry thrived during the 1960s and 1970s but began to decline from the 1980s. Due to the lack of leadership renewal in the 102 year-old association, the Singapore Rattan Industry Association decided to file for dissolution. Its assets at No.39A Lorong 17 Geylang were liquidated and the dissolution was completed at the end of 2011.
