Dutch Square

The Dutch Square, also referred to as the Town Square or Red Square, due to the surrounding red buildings, was the centre of Dutch administration during colonial Malacca. Pictured in this image is a clock tower, the foundation of which was first built by Straits Chinese merchant Tan Beng Swee (1828–1884). The tower was subsequently completed by his son Tan Jiak Kim in 1886. The large fountain was built in 1904 in tribute to Queen Victoria who passed away in 1901. Today, the Square continues to be popular with both tourists and locals alike.
