Another Woman is an exploration of the artist’s relationship with her mother, as well as an investigation of the position of women within family structures. The mother and daughter photographs, at times nude, are aimed at exploring the relationship between the two as bounded by their relations, as well as their identities as independent women, and is at the same time, an exercise in reclaiming intimate mother-daughter ties, often unspoken within the traditional Chinese family psyche. The body is seen as “the other woman” or the embodiment of women in general. What is important is not just the physical contact or touching of their bodies, but also the spaces between them as they embrace each other. Their embracing bodies thus function as a metaphor for the relationship between two generations that is both intimate (the touching) and distant (the spaces). The work includes an installation component, where Heng deploys photography and assemblages of objects as a means of investigating memory, and in the hope of acquiring a deeper understanding of her self-identity.
