This portrait miniature on ivory is of Captain William Hercules Ross, the eldest son of Captain Daniel Ross. Captain Daniel Ross, the renowned hydrographer, commanded the HMS Discovery, part of the naval escort that accompanied Raffles on his voyage to Singapore in 1819. The senior Ross is documented as having assisted Raffles to choose the site for the latter’s historic landing on the island on 28th January 1819. During the period when Captain Daniel Ross was engaged in various China Survey voyages, his family lived in Macao, where Hercules was born.
