Curtain tie backs were common in the bridal chamber. This pair of curtain ties is adorned with auspicious motifs of phoenixes and peonies. Peonies represent springtime which is considered an auspicious time to get married. Phoenixes are symbols of high virtue and grace. When depicted as a pair, the phoenixes also represent happiness and good relations in the marriage.
