This is a large, slip-decorated storage jar made from stone or earthernware. The main decorative motifs are two large flying phoenix interspersed with flowers. The phoenix is an auspicious symbol that represents beauty, grace, high virtue, the Empress and the bride. This jar is of a style commonly found in Peranakan homes and could be used as a pot to store water, grow plants or to rear fishes. In a Peranakan household, these jars were a common sight in kitchens, gardens and airwells.
