Cake mould

This is a “Kueh Belanda” mould. “Kueh Belanda” is commonly referred to as Love letters which are elongated wafer thin egg rolls. These clapper moulds have two plates that are clasped tightly together and attached to long handles so that the batter can be cooked over a charcoal fire. The clappers are engraved with motifs of fish, which are symbols of prosperity in the Chinese culture. The word “Belanda” means “Dutch” in Bahasa Melayu and this may point to the snack’s origin from the thin biscuits made by the Dutch. “Kueh Belanda” are common snacks offered to visiting guests during the Chinese New Year festivities.
