The Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) was a golf and country club formed in 1963 through a merger between the Royal Singapore Golf Club and the Royal Island Club. Loke Wan Tho, the Malayan-born businessman behind the Cathay Organisation cinema chain, served as the new club’s first president. Following the merger, SICC members were granted access to the Bukit and Sime golf courses on the western edge of MacRitchie Reservoir that were formerly for the exclusive use of Royal Singapore Golf Club members, as well as the Island golf course located on the southern edge of the Lower and Upper Peirce Reservoirs that was previously opened only to members of the Royal Island Club. An additional golf course known as the New Course was opened at the Peirce Reservoir site by then Chief Justice Wee Chong Jin in 1970. A new Bukit Clubhouse was opened in 1987 that featured a restaurant, theatrette, jackpot room, hairdressing salon, billiard room, card room, library and a swimming pool. The SICC remains one of the premier golf and country clubs in Singapore.
