The Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre was built in 1929 at the junction of Stamford Road and North Bridge Road. It was one of the few air-conditioned theatres in Singapore in its early days and served as a theatre until it was acquired by the Shaw Organisation in 1946 and converted into the Capitol Cinema. The popular Capitol Cinema also staged local and foreign performances before the screening of movies. In the late 1980s, the building underwent a series of renovations and was reopened as the Capitol Building for shops and offices in 1992.
