Prominent new structures built as part of the urban renewal plan include the 30-storey United Overseas Bank Building, which was the tallest landmark in the city centre when it was completed in 1974 (left background). However, it was overtaken as the highest structure in the area by the 52-storey Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Centre when it was completed in 1976 (centre background). A short distance away from these modern skyscrapers stood old colonial landmarks such as the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall (right centre), originally known as the Town Hall and the Victoria Memorial Hall when the two structures were completed in 1861 and 1905 respectively.
