This namwood chair is the more traditional Chinese-styled furniture used in Peranakan homes. On the last day of the wedding, the parents of the groom would be seated on red lacquered armchairs to welcome the new bride into the family. This example has been re-lacquered and gilded. The practice of re-lacquering, re-gilding and re-varnishing furniture was common in many Peranakan families.
