This teak armchair was part of a set of 12 dining chairs and a carved wood table. The caned seat and back not only made its production cheaper, but was also cooler to sit on in tropical climate. Such caned chairs were in fact reproductions of English furniture, as they were inspired by the ebony chairs with caned seats from Europe. From the early 20th century, Peranakan Chinese in the Straits Settlements adopted the use of English furniture.
