This Certificate of Admission belongs to Ho Kee Chin, a Hakka Chinese who arrived in Singapore on 30 July 1935 at the age of 19. In 1933, the government introduced the Aliens Ordinance Act to control immigration in response to the Great Depression. Upon landing, new immigrants had to pay a fee of $5 to obtain a landing permit, which had to be exchanged for a Certificate of Admission a month later.
