The Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple was built in 1827 and was dedicated to the worship of the goddess Sri Mariamman, who is venerated for her power to cure epidemics and diseases. The construction of the temple was made possible through the efforts of Narayana Pillay, who petitioned Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles for a piece of land for a Hindu temple and contributed money towards the purchase of the land. Pillay was one of the pioneer Indians who came to Singapore with Raffles in 1819. The Sri Mariamman Temple was gazetted as a national monument in 1973.
