Harbour Pavilion at Maritime Square promenade

The hexagon-shaped Harbour Pavilion hall (centre background) was built as part of an upgrading project for the World Trade Centre (WTC) complex that involved the creation of the Maritime Square exhibition and entertainment area. Other nautical-themed structures constructed as part of the project included the Expo Gateway and the Expo Halls 5 and 6 (right background). Commissioned by the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA), the 5,000-seat multi-purpose hall was designed to host activities ranging from live concerts to stage productions and exhibitions. Special features incorporated into the hall’s design included a portable stage and motorised retractable seats. Opened in March 1992, the 3,822-square-metre venue was then the second largest event hall after the Singapore Indoor Stadium. On opening night, the Broadway musical ‘42nd Street’ was staged to mark the occasion. The venue was officially closed down in December 2000 and the structure was eventually torn down to make way for the Harbour Front retail and entertainment complex.
