Chua Tiag Ming (T. M. Chua) was a photographer involved in the salon photography movement in Singapore in the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, he documented various aspects of labour in Singapore, especially the vanishing trades. The worker shown in this photograph is involved in calcining seashells, the product of which was used as a natural glaze for pottery.
