Princess Wilhelmina Helena Pauline Maria of the Netherlands was born in The Hague on 31 August 1880. She was the only child of King William III and his second wife, Adelheid Emma Wilhelmina Theresia, second daughter of Prince George Victor of Waldeck-Pyrmont. Princess Wilhelmina ascended the Dutch throne on 23 November 1890 at the age of ten, upon her father’s death. The business of the state was carried out under the regency of her mother until she reached her 18th year, where she was officially inaugurated as queen at Amsterdam on 6 September 1898.
