View of the Teutonia Club

This is a photograph by A. von Roessing, a German resident in Singapore in the 1890s who resided in Bukit Timah. Little is known about him except that he was a committee member of the Teutonia Club, the social and recreational club for the German community in Singapore since 1856, and was an active member of the Singapore Amateur Photographic Society. The Teutonia Club was founded in 1856 in a small house on North Bridge Road but moved six months later to Blanche House at Mount Elizabeth. This photograph shows the club premises which had been at the junction of Scotts and Stevens Roads from 1862. By 1886, membership had grown to more than 100 which necessitated a new clubhouse. This was designed by pioneer architectural firm, Swan and Maclaren, which also designed the Victoria Memorial Hall. The Teutonia Club was officially opened by the Acting Governor Sir James Alexander Swettenham on 21 September 1900. It is now the Goodwood Park Hotel.
