This night-time view of the city centre shows several prominent colonial landmarks found in the civic district located on the north bank of the Singapore River, including: St. Andrew’s Cathedral (right foreground), designed in the Gothic style by Lieutenant-Colonel Ronald MacPherson and completed in 1861 using Indian convict labour; the Old Supreme Court Building (right centre) with its distinctive neoclassical dome, built in 1939 at the site of the Grand Hotel de l'Europe; and the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall (centre), originally known as the Town Hall and the Victoria Memorial Hall when the two structures were completed in 1861 and 1905 respectively. Visible in the background are the multi-storey structures built as part of the government’s urban renewal plans for the Central Business District (CBD) on the south bank. One of the prominent landmarks in the area was the 30-storey United Overseas Bank (UOB) Building (centre background), which was the tallest landmark in the CBD when it was erected in 1974.
