Cover of Her World magazine

The cover of a November 1962 issue of Her World magazine depicted a Malayan woman in a modern update of the sarong kebaya suit. As shown by the design of the sarong kebaya, there is a strong Western influence seen in the ruffled sleeves and bottom. Unlike the traditional sarong kebaya which was fastened with a brooch, the modern update is usually fastened with a snap button. The modern design of the sarong kebaya reflected the new identity of Malayans, which had infused both regional and Western influences.
