The Esplanade - now the Padang - on which the Singapore Cricket Club built its first clubhouse, had always been the place where sportsmen met. It was also at the Esplanade where people gathered for the New Year sports games. Cricket aside, various sports were played at the cricket club during the 19th century, including lawn tennis, football, rugby and hockey.
