This is a receipt for $200 from Syed Omar bin Salim to Yu Yong Choon, for the payment of “materials, cooly labour, repairing brick work to house number 24, 25 and 27 [on] Stamford Road”. Yu’s signature signed in Chinese (余永春) can be seen at the bottom right corner acknowledging the receipt of payment. This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
