This is an English translation of the last will and testament of Mah Hussan Bedau, which was written by Inchy Osman on her behalf and published in Singapore on 15 January 1862. It was translated from Malay to English by the Singapore Translation Office on 27 July 1865. Mah Hussan Bedau bequeathed her house and the lot of land to her four heirs: her husband, Abdul Rahman, her son, Hussain, and her two adopted children, Abdulla and Nouriah. The house was located at Tanjong Paggar Road beside the house of Ahminah binte Iwawdi and at the foot of the hill belonging to Syed Abdulla Junied. She specified that they were forbidden from selling the house though they could always reside in it and if repairs were required, the cost was to be borne by all four of them. She had mortgaged the deeds of the house and land for a sum of 100 dollars to Ramsamy Chitty, at the interest rate of two dollars per month. She gave her heirs the choice of paying for the interest and bequeathed the contents of the house to them. Her marriage dower was to be given to her husband, Abdul Rahman. This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
