This is a receipt dated 30 Syawal 1288H (corresponding to 11 January 1872) acknowledging a repayment of $8 and 79 ¾ cents for taking ship-related goods (barang kapal) from a Chinese man at Tanjong Rhu, on behalf of the payer and his men. It is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
