This large gilt namwood cabinet in red and gold is one of the finest examples of a Peranakan wedding wardrobe. Ornate carvings of human figures like warriors, boatmen and horses in the midst of combat cover almost the entire front wood surface of this piece. Wardrobes like these were made by Chinese craftsmen with joints that did not require nails.Wedding wardrobes were some of the most prized possessions of a Peranakan lady, which formed part of her wedding trousseau. They were used by the bride for the storage of the couple's clothes.
