Wooden chariot set

This set includes two horses and a wooden two-wheeled chariot with a standing charioteer and parasol. Each piece has several parts so that the whole has to be constructed. The pieces are crudely carved with traces red and black pigment-painted decoration.Wooden burial artefacts from the Han dynasty are rare. The absence of movement, and the stiffness of depiction suggest that this set of 'mingqi' or burial ware was completed in a hurry, or that little was spent in the making of it.The custom of burying objects with the deceased stems from the belief in life after death.
