This five-hooded 'naga' (serpent) ornament is an impressive work of art. The hood is adorned with precious stones and a lingam is depicted on it. The serpent or naga is considered to be an attribute of Lord Shiva. Naga ornaments like these have been used to decorate the lingam (phallic form) of Shiva, which is placed over the 'yoni' pedestal. Yoni is the Sanskrit word for the female reproductive organ or the source or origin of life.
