The Victoria Theatre and Memorial Hall with the Dalhousie Obelisk in the foreground

Following the surrender of the Japanese on 15 August 1945, a victory parade was held one week after the British returned to Singapore. As part of the celebration, the Victoria Theatre and Memorial Hall was decorated with lights to create a festive atmosphere. Also clearly featured in the photograph is the Dalhousie Obelisk, a monument built to commemorate the second Governor-General of India, Marquis Dalhousie’s visit to Singapore in February 1850. It was completed at the end of 1850.
