This door hanging from Sumatra is embroidered in gold threads against a black background. There are also calligraphic inscriptions all around the hanging. This was used as a decorative hanging over a doorway.Calligraphy has always been considered the noblest and most featured art in the world of Islam as it transmits the Divine Revelations from God. The pious desire to beautify the Word of God was a central factor in the development of calligraphy in the Islamic world. As one of the main decorative forms in Islamic art, calligraphy can be found a variety of media—from manuscripts to large inscriptions on stone or on textiles.
