The word chupu, comes from the Malay word 'chepu', to mean a covered vessel used to store things. In Baba Malay, the word chupu refers to this form and it comes in various sizes, designs and colours. The chupu also had a specific use in Peranakan wedding. It was used as a serving vessel or 'tiam sim' for special tonics the bride would serve to her new husband.
