This talismanic medallion is one of the varieties of objects used or worn by the dervish - a mystic who practices asceticism. The dervish would dress differently from the rest of society, wearing woollen hats and carrying kashkul (begging bowl), made of metal or coconut shells. In the 19th century, there was a vogue for dervishes in the Qajar society.
