Nonyaware spittoon

This spittoon, known as 'tong luda', features phoenix and peony motifs. It contains the spittle from betel nut chewing, and reflect social status when depicted in portrait paintings. Spittoons come in several sizes: tall spittoons like this were placed on the floor and near washstands in bridal chambers; table spittoons were smaller and more easily shared during social gatherings.
