A classic example of Wu Zhifan's shallow relief carving (bodi yangwen) technique, this exquisite brushpot was an objet d'art to be collected and admired by the scholar's class. Wu Zhifan was the successor of the Jiading school of carving founded by the Zhu Family. Wu specialised in three-dimensional carving, a genre of bamboo carving institutionalised by the Zhu family, and shallow relief carving, bodi yangwen, a feat which Wu himself established.
