This knife has bone inlay on ebony. It is used to cut the 'qalam' or reed pen that is used for calligraphic writing. The 'qalam' has to be cut according to the required slant and size before use.Muslims around the world are unified by the Qur’an and as such, the holy word and the vehicle by which it is transmitted, that is calligraphy, remains an integral part of Muslim identity. It is a decorative form of Islamic art and has adorned surfaces in a wide variety of media. The Ottoman period was renowned for producing exemplary and creative forms of calligraphic artwork.
