Cast in the elegant style of the Chola period (9th-13th centuries) bronzes, the sculpture is very slender though powerful. Of his ornaments the warrior’s waist ornament and shoulder tassels are most characteristic and unique to this sculpture. His body is human while his head and the body proportion (long arms and short legs) are simian. Hanuman's gesture of palm facing the mouth and the other in lola hasta (dangling with ease) is characteristic of Hanuman images from the Chola. This gesture implies his adoration, humility and ever readiness to serve his master, Rama. Hanuman is the powerful ape god in the Hindu pantheon and also devotee of Lord Rama.
