Situated at the junction of Middle Road and Victoria Street, the Empress Hotel began operations as early as the 1930s. The four-storey hotel with its distinctive tower had a rooftop restaurant, the Empress Restaurant, which was a popular venue for holding weddings and various other social gatherings. Demolished in 1985, the site where the hotel once stood is now occupied by the new National Library Building.
