Shrine

This ornate shrine features a parapet decorated with ornate carving and gold leaf decoration. The interior of the shrine is painted with the scene of Buddha preaching with a golden stupa in the background. The highly elaborate style of the carving is typical of furniture made during the Rattanakosin or Bangkok period (19th century). It is also inspired by Chinese decorative art of this period. As Theravada Buddhism encourages personal salvation, such shrines were used not only in temples but also in households. The style of carving and gilding also suggest that the workmanship was heavily inspired by the Chinese tradition.
