Buddha is seen here seated in dhyanasana (meditation posture) with legs folded in padmasana (lotus posture) with a samghati (monk's robe) covering his left shoulder. It is interesting to note that Anuradhapuram was a flourishing Buddhist centre until the 10th century. This Buddha seated in dhyanasana (meditation posture), is from the Auradhapuram region of Sri Lanka. The expression here on Buddha’s face has meditative calmness and inwardness. Sculptures such as this have been found in the hundreds suggesting that they were mass produced for donation to monasteries and temples as an act of religious merit by pilgrims.
