Book cover with seated Shakyamuni with bodhisattva

This book cover has the strong influence of Pagan period (900-1300) Buddha images from Myanmar. Depicted is the Buddha Shakyamuni (another name for historical Buddha), similar in likeness to the images depicted in the murals of Abheyadana temple in Pagan. Buddha Shakyamuni is in bhumisparasha mudra (earth witnessing gesture), flanked by Maitreya and Avalokiteshvara (enlightened beings). Celestial figures on stylized clouds shower holy water on them. The architectural details are noteworthy as they relate to Burmese architecture from the same period.
