This tile contains all the three characteristic expressions of Islamic art - the preference for abstract motifs, especially calligraphic, the organisation of motifs in a harmonious or symmetrical manner and decorative designs. The shape of the tile is geometric – an eight-pointed star, painted with a border of pseudo calligraphy (words have no meaning) and floral motifs. The orthodox prohibition against the depiction of living things was not always followed in non-religious settings, as can be seen in this tile where animals are used as decorative motifs. This tile would most probably have decorated the walls of a palace.
