Mesh purses were popular from the early 20th century and were in vogue in the 1920s. These delicate handmade silver purses were only used on formal occasions. They were either hung at the waist or held by the straps. Skilled craftsmen made the interlocking rings and assembled them into a network. Purses like these were favoured by westernised Peranakan Chinese women who commissioned silversmiths to make purses modelled on Victorian-style ones.
